What is a funny picture? I don’t know. I’ve been asked that many times, but I don’t have a good answer. What I do know is that this picture is funny. It is also a very good picture. Subject, colors, technique – everything works. I am surprised and delighted. I say to myself: Wow! To the winner I can only say congratulations, and that I wish I had taken it myself. Go photography!
It’s only a couple of weeks since I was at this exact spot. I sat on the benches watching the children jump from this diving board at Sørenga. Sometimes it isn’t so easy to say what I like about a picture, but here it’s simple. I like the warm evening light. I like the good atmosphere. I like the bodies glowing golden after a long day in the sun. And I like the youngsters frozen in the air for a brief moment before gravity pulls them down into the warm Oslo Fjord. The picture reminds me of the ultimate swimming photo: Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen’s image from Abkhazia on the Black Sea.
This picture made me think of the Disney movie Ratatouille. When the fictional food critic Anton Ego tastes the rat Remy’s ratatouille and is immediately taken back to his childhood. That’s how it is here. Everything in this picture relies on the fact that we ourselves, on our way home from school, have turned our heads toward the sky and felt the snow falling down like wet, cold caresses on our faces. We know how it feels. I’m 11 years old again. Thank you.
